Diogo Jota caused a stir when he left Atletico Madrid for Wolverhampton Wanderers but now he is a Premier League star.

No one will be questioning Diogo Jota’s decision to sign for Wolverhampton Wanderers now.

Plenty of eyebrows were raised at the time, however, when the young Portuguese forward left Atletico Madrid to join a side who had finished 15th in England’s second tier just a few weeks earlier.

In just over a year as a Wolves player, Jota’s 17 goals inspired his side to the Championship title and he is now thriving in the Premier League, with Nuno Espirito Santo’s side three points adrift of the Champions League places.

In quotes reported by the Birmingham Mail, the former Porto loanee has insisted that he has silenced those doubters.

“In Portugal many people didn’t understand our move,” Jota said. “Not just me but (Ruben) Neves as well. But we are here now and the people that said things now understand.

“Of course it was a risk because it wasn’t a shortcut to reach the Premier League, but in the end it was a good move.”

It certainly was. As reported by the Express and Star in June, Wolves made Jota’s loan deal permanent by paying Atletico Madrid a cool £13 million.

And the 21-year-old has made a bright start to life in the Premier League, although he has failed to score in eight games so far. These days, Jota is not even the most high profile Portuguese footballer at Molineux, with seasoned internationals Rui Patricio and Joao Moutinho also seduced by Wolves’ increasingly exciting project.
