With Derby County a goal down to bitter rivals Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Monday night, Martyn Waghorn really could not have chosen a worse time to miss a glorious chance.

The £5 million striker, who joined from Ipswich Town last summer (EADT), was handed the perfect chance to cancel out Yohan Benalouane’s second-minute opener but fluffed his lines. Waghorn raced clear on to a perfectly weighted Duane Holmes cross but clipped a tame finish well wide of the far post.

That was about as close as it came for a Derby side who were well below their best, and not for the first time in 2019, as the pressure rises on Frank Lampard.

To make things even sweeter, Nottingham Forest were keen to sign Waghorn from Ipswich last summer before he moved to Pride Park instead, as reported by EADT.

The 29-year-old has hardly looked worthy of his £5 million price-tag in the last few months, however, scoring just four goals in 24 league games for the Rams. His horror miss on Monday rather summed up his season.

So while Waghorn wasted a chance to show Forest what they are missing, quite literally, his dismal finish makes the hosts’ win even sweeter.
