Derby County forward Johnny Russell says he enjoys watching Huddersfield Town play and, if Steve McClaren is appointed, he could be a worthwhile addition.

Steve McClaren becoming Huddersfield Town’s Director of Football could have an impact on his former club, Derby County.

The Sun claimed that the veteran coach, recently sacked for a second time at Pride Park, is interested in replacing Norwich City-bound Stewart Webber behind the scenes at the John Smith’s Stadium.

And Derby supporters will be wondering whether, if he does get the job, he will attempt to steal a number of his former players. And though Johnny Russell has stepped on the gas since new manager Gary Rowett arrived, managing a goal and an assist in his last four games, his future is still uncertain after being heavily linked with a January exit.

McClaren brought the former Dundee United forward to Derby in the first-place back in 2013 and, across his two spells at the club, Russell was a regular in the starting XI.

“Fantastic. He has such energy and is the catalyst at the moment,” McClaren told the BBC of the Scottish wideman in 2014.

And with Huddersfield set to lose Chelsea loanee Izzy Brown at the end of the season, one of McClaren’s first tasks if he was given the job at the Yorkshire club would be to find a replacement on the left hand side of the attack.

Russell could be an obvious candidate. After all, he could hardly hide his admiration for the style of play employed by manager David Wagner after Derby had narrowly defeated Huddersfield away from home in March last year.

“That was the first time I’ve seen Huddersfield under their new manager and I thought they were really impressive,” Russell, who scored coming off the bench, told The Examiner.

“They look to play all over the pitch and they’re pleasing on the eye to watch.”

Could Russell be a part of that effervescent attack next season?
