Derby moving for Hull’s Abel Hernandez would make sense for Rams

Hull City are set to bid farewell to Abel Hernandez and he could stay in the Championship, but is it about time Derby County showed an interest?

Derby County had one of the strongest forward lines in the Championship last season. But, after missing out on promotion yet again thanks to a play-off semi-final defeat to Fulham, their attack is set to lose some of its depth.

Sam Winnall, as it stands, will return to Sheffield Wednesday at the end of his season-long loan spell. But that is nothing compared to reports in the Telegraph stating that Derby could be forced to sell their 21-goal Championship Golden Boot winner Matej Vydra.

The Czech striker, who is valued at around £8 million, could be sold with the Rams needing to cut costs and slash the budget.

Therefore, with two of their main goal-scorers set to leave and with money tight, the fact that Abel Hernandez’s contract is about to expire should not go unnoticed at Pride Park.

The Hull City striker has been heavily linked with a number of Championship sides, with Leeds Live reporting that Leeds United look likely to beat sides such as Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest to his signature as things stand.

But Hernandez on a free could be the perfect deal for a Derby side facing an era of austerity, in the words of owner Mel Morris.

Hernandez is one of the Championship’s most lethal strikers and, despite injuries restricting him to just eight starts in 2017/18, he notched eight goals. There are few players better suited to replace Vydra – especially for free.
