Former Chelsea, Arsenal and England left-back Ashley Cole is a free agent, could he reunite with Frank Lampard at Championship hopefuls Derby County?

One of the greatest English footballers of his generation is suddenly available on a free transfer. And this has got Derby County fans talking.
As reported by The Mirror, a certain Ashley Cole is now on the market after being released by MLS outfit LA Galaxy and, despite the fact that Cole is due to turn 38 next month, the report adds that he has offers from a number of Championship clubs.
But could Derby be among them? There is the obvious connection with Frank Lampard, Cole’s former England and Chelsea teammate who is now the first-team manager at Pride Park.

And the left-back position has been something of a problem area for The Rams in recent times too, meaning the availability of the sixth most capped Englishman of all time has not passed Derby supporters by.
But for all those who believe the three-time Premier League champion would offer invaluable experience on and off the pitch for a side chasing promotion, others have pointed out that Cole is not one of the world’s premiere left-backs these days.
He has spent the last two years in a so-called ‘retirement league’ and his age was made brutally apparent during his last spell in Europe, a short and ill-fated spell at Roma. Maybe recalling the impressive Max Lowe from his loan spell at Aberdeen would be a better option.
