Efe Ambrose is training with Championship outfit Derby County after leaving Scottish Premiership side Hibernian in January.
Derby County manager Frank Lampard has admitted to the Daily Record that a deal to sign free agent Efe Ambrose could be done soon.
The 30-year-old centre-back is without a club after exercising a clause in his contract which allowed him to walk out of Scottish Premiership outfit Hibernian in January.
He has been linked with a number of Championship clubs since, the Daily Record claiming that Nottingham Forest, Sheffield Wednesday, Wigan Athletic and Bolton Wanderers were interested.
But Derby are now in pole position. Ambrose is training with the Rams as he bids to earn a contract with Lampard’s promotion chasing side, who are lacking depth at centre-back after failing to sign Everton’s Matthew Pennington on transfer deadline day.
In quotes reported by the Daily Record, Lampard has admitted that the Nigeria international could be a Derby player in the near future.
“We are talking and he is training with us,” said the former Chelsea and England midfielder.
“It is not done yet, but it could be done soon.”
Ambrose perhaps unfairly has a reputation for making crucial mistakes north of the border but you cannot argue with his track record.
The defender won four Scottish Premiership titles with Celtic and was instrumental as Hibs earned promotion from the second tier in the 2016/17 season.
