Both Derby County and West Bromwich Albion appear to have missed out on their top striker target as their hopes for a return to the Premier League suffer a blow.

The Sun (24 June, page 60) reported that Derby wanted Bristol City’s Bobby Reid to replace Matej Vydra at Pride Park, the Czech striker being one of two just players who scored more than The Robins star’s 19 Championship goals in a career-best 2017/18 season.

And The Mirror claimed not long before that that West Brom were in advanced negotiations to sign the diminutive hitman after seeing an initial £7 million bid rejected.

Reid exploded into life last season for The Robins as Lee Johnson’s side flirted with a place in the play-offs. He scored 21 goals in all competitions, narrowly losing out in the race for the Golden Boot behind Vydra and Lewis Grabban.

So Reid would have been a fantastic addition for either Derby or West Brom, who are both expected to bid farewell to their star strikers before the window slams shut.

But now Frank Lampard and Darren Moore could both be left disappointed. According to TEAMtalk, Reid is having a medical at Premier League newcomers Cardiff City ahead of an anticipated £10 million move to South Wales.

You can hardly blame Reid for wanting to seize his chance in the top flight but the news that he is going to Cardiff will shove Derby and West Brom right back to square one.
