Forgotten goalkeeper Matz Sels left Newcastle United for Jupiler league giants Anderlecht after their promotion to the Premier League.

When Newcastle United paid £5 million to sign goalkeeper Matz Sels from Champions League round-of-16 outfit Gent in the summer of 2016, they probably expected that the Belgian would be their number one for years to come.

Instead, Sels flopped spectacularly at St James’ Park. He struggled to deal with the physicality of Championship football, quickly became targeted by canny opposition and, after just nine league appearances, was dropped indefinitely with Karl Darlow taking his place.

Two years after he made that ill-fated move to Tyneside, Sels could be about to depart on a permanent deal.

The 26-year-old has got his career back on track during a loan spell at Anderlecht and The Chronicle reports that he has no real desire to return to the North East after end of this season.

“A return to Newcastle United will be difficult. Newcastle have paid a lot of money and they want to recoup a part,” Sels said.

And, according to DH, Anderlecht are keen to keep him in Belgium for the long-term.

But, if the reaction of fans is anything to go by, Sels will not be too badly missed either. It is not as if Newcastle are lacking when it comes to quality goalkeepers right now and The Mirror claims that Martin Dubravka looks more than likely to make his loan switch from Sparta Prague permanent in the summer for £5.2 million.

Goodbye, and good riddance, then to Sels.
