Mo Salah scored a screamer as Liverpool beat Chelsea while Aubameyang’s winning goal in Arsenal’s Watford triumph was a little different.
Mo Salah scored arguably the goal of the season on Sunday when he launched a rocket of a shot into the top corner in Liverpool’s hard-fought 2-0 victory over Chelsea.
But Dean Saunders believes the Egyptian’s moment of magic had nothing on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s blooper reel effort a day later, speaking on Alan Brazil’s Sports Breakfast on talkSPORT (16 April, 9:00am).
While Salah’s goal was a real thing of beauty, a mix of picture-perfect technique and an explosion of power, Aubameyang’s winner in Arsenal’s triumph over Watford at Vicarage Road was perhaps more reliant on luck than brilliance.
The Gabon international charged down Ben Foster at full speed and was rewarded for his efforts when the Hornets goalkeeper cannoned a clearance off his shins and into the open goal.
Saunders might be alone in thinking that was the better goal but, considering the Welshman is responsible for one of the most opportunist strikes in Premier League history, it is perhaps no surprise that he admires Aubameyang’s resourcefulness.
“Aubameyang’s goal – and this is going to sound stupid – but that’s Goal of the Season, for me,” said Saunders, himself a former Liverpool forward.
“You look at Salah’s goal and you think, ‘how can that be better?’ But Aubameyang has chased a lost cause, he’s closed down Ben Foster and turned it into a goal.
“Personally, being a striker and coaching strikers, I enjoyed that goal more than Salah’s. He didn’t have to do it, it’s effort and determination.”
Saunders may have a point but it is unlikely that Aubameyang’s 23rd striker of a stellar campaign is going to be up for any Goal of the Season gongs.
