Mile Jedinak is reportedly set to leave Aston Villa this summer but the Championship club are understood to be keen on Dean Marney.
Along with Jack Grealish, Jonathan Kodjia, James Chester and co, Mile Jedinak has been the latest key player linked with a move away from cash-strapped crisis-club Aston Villa.
The World Game reported on Friday that the veteran Australian has agreed a deal with an as-yet unnamed club and it seems that his two-year stay in Birmingham is over. Jedinak earns £28,000-a-week at Villa Park and, with the club in the midst of a real financial mess, his departure seems to be a necessary evil with Steve Bruce’s side under pressure to raise around £40 million to avoid FFP sanctions.
And have Villa now identified a replacement for a man who has been so influential in claret and blue since his 2016 signing from Crystal Palace? Potentially.
In Dean Marney, Aston Villa would have a player capable of providing experience and proven Championship quality. The 34-year-old won the second tier title with Burnley as recently as 2016.
And the Mirror (live blog, 10.09am) is reporting that Marney is now training with Aston Villa as he looks for a new club after being released by Burnley at the end of last season.
The chances of a deal being done, however, are very much in the balance. Bruce has been told he cannot even afford to sign free agents right now, which means he will have to sell players in order to raise funds for Marney’s potential arrival.
Nottingham Forest are also circling in the background.
