Tottenham Hotspur reportedly failed with a £45million bid to sign Ajax’s Frenkie de Jong during the summer transfer window.

Tottenham Hotspur are not a side that tends to spend huge sums on a single player, particularly in January. But if they want to bring Frenkie de Jong to North London, they will surely have to break the mould.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Spurs had an offer of £45 million rejected by Ajax this summer for the 21-year-old midfielder.
That would have made De Jong the most expensive player in the club’s history, exceeding the £42 million Tottenham paid the same Eredivisie giants for Davinson Sanchez a year ago.
Ajax are determined not to sell De Jong so, understandably, will demand top dollar in the New Year, too. And now that Tottenham have set the bar high, they must be willing to pay a massive fee if they are to lure the newly capped Dutch international away from Amsterdam.

Mundo Deportivo claimed last week that Tottenham were hoping to hijack Barcelona’s move for the versatile De Jong, who can play in central midfield or defence. Mauricio Pochettino is understood to be a huge fan and is driving Spurs’ interest with a January bid on the cards.
But, after allegedly seeing a £45 million offer rejected, it remains to be seen how much more they are prepared to pay. This could be a real test of Tottenham’s ambition.
