Davy Klaassen made just seven Premier League appearances for Everton and is now in the Bundesliga with Werder Bremen.
You have to feel for Davy Klaassen. The Dutch international was never really given a fair crack of the whip after his £23.7 million move from Ajax in the summer of 2017.
Klaassen made just three Premier League starts under Ronald Koeman, David Unsworth and Sam Allardyce before being flogged to Werder Bremen in a cut-price deal.
In quotes reported by Elf Voetbal, Klaassen has now opened up on his struggles at Goodison Park and has been especially critical of Allardyce.
“Allardyce said shortly after his appointment that I was physically not strong enough for his (style of) playing. His game has been set up with big, strong boys. I could handle it, but he would not listen to me anyway,” said the technical midfielder.
Klaassen was offered an escape route by Napoli on the final day of the January transfer window but Allardyce would later claim in the Times that the deal fell through due to a disagreement over image rights.
The former Ajax skipper, however, has now rubbished those claims.
“The story Allardyce said of me not giving up my image rights stopping the transfer was nonsense,” he said. “Allardyce almost never spoke to me, but often about me.”
Fortunately for Klaassen, he is putting that dismal spell at Goodison Park behind him.
The 25-year-old has helped Werder Bremen to fourth in the Bundesliga with seven games played, with head coach Florian Kohfeldt recently lauding the midfielder’s ‘world class’ performance against Hertha Berlin.
