Queens Park Rangers loaned Wheeler out to League One leaders Pompey, but the winger is struggling for starts.

David Wheeler joined Portsmouth on loan from Queens Park Rangers in the summer with the idea of getting some regular first-team football under his belt.
The talented winger shone in the lower leagues with Exeter City but struggled to prove himself in the Championship when joining QPR last season, starting only five games. And, just 12 months into a three-year deal, he left Loftus Road for the South Coast in a bid to rebuild his reputation.
But Wheeler has found his path to the starting XI blocked at League One leaders Portsmouth, too, with Jamal Lowe in terrific form. The 28-year-old has only started two games for Pompey, although he did score in the 4-0 FA Cup first round win against Maidenhead at the weekend.
Speaking to The News, Wheeler admits that his spell at Fratton Park has not exactly gone to plan.
“Of course it has been frustrating, any footballer wants to start week in, week out and be involved in the team and to experience Saturday afternoons,” Wheeler said.

“I am definitely frustrated, but just try to approach it in the right way.
“I wouldn’t say QPR are happy with me not playing. I wouldn’t imagine they would be happy about it, but it’s one of those things.”
Wheeler is expected to make his third start in Portsmouth colours when they play Tottenham’s U21s in the Checkatrade Trophy this week. It remains to be seen, however, whether he can force his way into Kenny Jackett’s starting XI and whether he has any future at QPR.
