Callum McGregor was linked with Premier League outfit Leicester City recently after winning the Scottish Premiership title with Celtic.
David Moyes believes it is only a matter of time before Callum McGregor leaves Celtic for the bright lights of the Premier League, speaking on talkSPORT.
Celtic are currently reeling from the loss of an influential academy graduate. After a prolonged transfer saga, left-back Kieran Tierney brought an end to 14 years in green and white to complete a £25 million move to Arsenal.
And while Celtic fans are understandably mourning the departure of a modern-day legend, The Hoops have grown rather accustomed to seeing their star players move south of the border.
Virgil van Dijk, Victor Wanyama, Stuart Armstrong and Gary Hooper have all made the switch over the years and Moyes believes that key midfielder McGregor could soon be about to follow in their footsteps.
“We need to get the best Scottish players playing in the English Premier League. So many Scottish players of old were part of the big English teams. Callum McGregor would be the one (to leave next),” Moyes said on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast (13 August, 9.45am).
Glasgow-born McGregor has certainly made remarkable progress in recent years, going from squad player to one of the first names on the team sheet. A skilful and technically gifted midfielder with a hammer of a shot, this big-game performer scored six goals and provided 16 assists as Celtic sealed another domestic treble last season.
The Daily Record claims that Leicester City failed with a bid for McGregor as Brendan Rodgers looked to reunite with one of his Parkhead favourites. But as long as he continues to go from strength to strength, expect McGregor to be a regular feature in the gossip columns.
