Pedro Obiang may have only started nine Premier League games this season but he remains a key figure at West Ham United, according to chairman David Gold on Twitter.
In a campaign where most of the Hammers typically consistent players, from Mark Noble to Winston Reid to Adrian, have looked a shadow of their usual selves, Slaven Bilic’s side have slipped alarmingly towards the relegation zone despite expecting to build on last season’s seventh-placed finish.
And although an impressive 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Anfield has at least stopped the rot, West Ham are currently still just a point above the drop zone and two off bottom placed Sunderland.
Therefore, it is safe to say Bilic could do with a few more of his charges performing with the same energy and reliability as midfielder Obiang, whose impressive display against Jurgen Klopp’s side has only reinforced the notion that he should be making that central midfield spot his own.
And Gold has taken to Twitter to confirm that he is a huge admirer of the former Sampdoria enforcer.
With the controversial move away from their spiritual Upton Park home still wrenching at the heart-strings of many a committed West Ham fan, the relationship between the supporters and the board has become increasingly stretched in recent months.
Therefore, at least the quality and the effectiveness of Obiang is something they can agree on.
