Harry Winks is shining in the Premier League for Tottenham – but potential new signings could push him down the pecking order

Harry Winks is back to full fitness and establishing himself again as one of the most promising young midfielders in English football.
The 22-year-old struggled with injuries at the start of 2018 which forced him to sit out the final few months of an impressive breakthrough season at Tottenham Hotspur. But Winks appears to have put those problems behind him and is currently racking up a collection of impressive performances for club and country.
Winks stood out as an otherwise disappointing Spurs side lost 4-2 at home to Barcelona in the Champions League and he was excellent on Spanish soil as England sealed a famous Nations League win in Seville in October.
And, speaking on Sky Sports’ The Debate, former Tottenham midfielder Danny Murphy has admitted that he expects Winks to go very far – and has warned the North Londoners about spending big on midfielders when they have talents like the Hemel Hempsted-born youngster available.
“The quality of players that they’re going for becomes better gradually,” Murphy said.
“I think he’s progressed the club forward more quickly than anyone anticipated, but you can’t then all of a sudden go ‘let’s go and get some big players and pay them super money’.

“Because then you have a domino effect of players knocking on your door (like) Harry Winks, who I think is going to be a terrific player.”
Winks, who signed a new five-year deal back in May, is pretty much the archetypal Tottenham midfielder, combining intelligence and composure in possession with commendable work rate off the ball.
He is one of a number of players, like Harry Kane, Jay Rodriguez, Luke Shaw and Dele Alli, who have become England players under Pochettino.
