Dwight Gayle could find his position under threat at Newcastle United but is there a chance of a return to Premier League rivals Crystal Palace?

Roy Hodgson, Manager of Crystal Palace looks on during the Premier League match between Crystal Palace and Chelsea at Selhurst Park on October 14, 2017 in London, England.

Crystal Palace appear to be spreading their bets as Roy Hodgson looks for a natural-born goal-scorer to fire the club clear of relegation danger in the second half of the Premier League season.

According to the Daily Mail, Palace are in talks to sign Italian international Eder from Inter Milan for around £8.5 million. Meanwhile, the likes of Khouma Babacar, Oumar Niasse and Moussa Dembele have all been linked with big money moves to Selhurst Park.

But what about a player that the fans know well? Is there a space at Selhurst these days for one Dwight Gayle?

At the age of 27, and now into his fourth season as a Premier League player, Gayle remains an enigma. For all those who claim he is a natural in front of goal, blessed with that innate killer instinct, the cynics will point to the fact that he has never been trusted to start regularly for a top flight club.

Gayle inspired Newcastle to the Championship title last season with 23 league goals. But it is telling that manager Rafa Benitez has only picked him from the start 11 times in the Premier League.

And with Newcastle stepping up their pursuit of a big name, big money striker, Gayle’s position could come under threat.

But would Palace fans welcome him back?
