The former Nottingham Forest manager has been tipped to take over at Rangers although he did not seem so keen last time.

The mere mention of Billy Davies in conjunction with the vacant managerial role at Rangers is likely to divide fans. Therefore, Sky Sports’ claim that the outspoken Scotsman is among the favourites to replace the recently departed Mark Warburton should elicit a strong response among the blue half of Glasgow.

The 52-year-old has not worked since being fired by Nottingham Forest in 2014; an all-encompassing collapse damaging his reputation and costing him his job.

Nonetheless, Davies has unfinished business at Ibrox. After all, he began his playing career in Rangers colours and, 37 years on, reports suggest he could make a surprise return within the next couple of days.

However, as reported by the Evening Times, Davies admitted that he turned down the chance to take over at Rangers last season due to ‘outside influences’.

Therefore, with confusion reigning over the manner of Warburton’s so-called ‘resignation’, coupled with below-par performances on the pitch and a damaging lack of investment from boardroom level, there is little reason to suggest Davies would be any more enticed by the role this time around.

“When I looked at the Rangers situation there were many different factions involved in trying to take over,” Davies said last year in quotes reported by the Evening Times.

“In my opinion, too much politics, too little football. This was an unstable club. I didn’t think that it was time for me to step into that type of environment.

“Good luck to anybody else that does, good luck to anybody else that wanted to take on that. That’s their decision.”

This hardly bodes well for Rangers as they aim to attract a manager capable of wading through the thrashing waves at Ibrox until at least the end of the season.

Furthermore, the fans’ subdued reactions to uninspiring reports suggesting Alex McLeish could return to the club means the board are unlikely to emerge from this latest drama with any discernible credit.
