Wolverhampton Wanderers full-back Matt Doherty was expected to be forced out of Molineux this summer with Leeds United a possible destination.

Change is afoot once again at Molineux. Wolverhampton Wanderers, with the backing of their wealthy Chinese owners and the string pulling of super-agent Jorge Mendes, have already welcomed seven new faces.

And, if they had it their own way, Philip Heise would be the eighth. The Express and Star reports that the Dynamo Dresden left-back, who is valued at around £3 million, has been on Wolves’ radar for some time.

Yet, the report adds that a deal could now be in the balance. Heise only joined the German second division outfit in January from Stuttgart and Dresden are proving difficult to deal with.

As a result, Wolves believe they have wasted too much time negotiating the deal and could be tempted to pull the plug.

What impact this has on Leeds United, meanwhile, remains to be seen. According to The Mirror (page 61, July 9th), The Whites were targeting a deal for Wolves’ versatile full-back Matt Doherty, a natural right sider who spent the majority of last season filling in on the left.

Under threat?

The Express and Star claimed that Doherty, as well as captain Danny Batth who has also been linked with Leeds, could be forced out of Molinuex to make way for new signings.

The former Republic of Ireland Under-21 international, who scored and assisted four goals apiece last season, could be a solid addition for a Leeds side on the lookout for a new left-back after Charlie Taylor completed his protracted move to Burnley.

The Mirror claim that he would cost £2.5 million.

It was expected that a deal for Heise would be the final straw for Doherty, allowing him to leave the club this summer. However, with the German’s move under threat, Wolves may be less receptive to offers for Doherty from a direct Championship rival.

Therefore, Leeds may be rooting for Wolves to get the deal over the line.
