Huddersfield Town beat West Bromwich Albion to the signature of Montpellier striker Steve Mounie in the summer; will he come back to haunt the Baggies?

Steve Mounie’s fine breakthrough season in Ligue 1 for Montpellier had caught West Bromwich Albion’s eye.

According to Sky Sports, the Baggies had made the target man a top priority during the summer transfer window after he struck 14 times in 32 starts last season. West Brom’s most prolific centre-forward, meanwhile, was Salomon Rondon with four.

Of course, Mounie did arrive in England, but in Yorkshire rather than the Midlands.

As reported by the BBC, he signed for Huddersfield Town instead of West Brom for a fee of £11.5 million. And, seven months on, he could return to haunt the Baggies at the worst possible time for under-fire manager Alan Pardew.

According to the Sun, Pardew has two games to save his job at The Hawthorns, starting with a real relegation six-pointer against Huddersfield on Saturday.

West Brom have won one out of 25 Premier League games, sit bottom of the table and seven points adrift of 17th place.

And a defence which has looked more than more shaky as the season has gone on will surely be nervous about taking on Mounie who, with three goals in his last five games (or four in five if you ignore Steve Cook’s deflection during the Terriers’ 4-1 thrashing of Bournemouth), is enjoying his best prolonged run in English football.

It has been a difficult debut season for Mounie but he is starting to hit his stride and was fantastic against Eddie Howe’s Cherries, dominating a meek defence and scoring a typical bullet header.

And Pardew will be praying a man Tony Pulis failed to sign does not leave West Brom looking for a third manager this season.
