West Bromwich Albion reportedly want Blackburn Rovers’ Championship star Dack, but should they be looking at Peterborough United’s Maddison instead?
Blackburn Rovers paid just £750,000 to sign Bradley Dack from Gillingham in the summer of 2017. Just over a year on, he could be worth £20 million.
That is according to the Sun (7 October, page 60), who reports that West Brom are interested in paying a club-record fee to bring the gifted Dack to The Hawthorns.
Now, the 24-year-old has lit up the second tier this season, scoring six goals in nine games while turning heads with his skill, vision and all-too-rare ability to sniff out pockets of space inside the penalty area.
Dack would surely make an already exciting West Brom side favourites for promotion. But is there better value out there?
Rather than paying £20 million for the former League One Player of the Year, perhaps the Baggies should cut out their Blackburn middle-man and dip straight into the third tier for a cheaper alternative to Dack.
Peterborough United winger Marcus Maddison has looked too good for League One for a while now, after all. A set piece specialist with a penchant for long-range stunners, Maddison scored 12 and produced 23 assists in all competitions last season.
HITC Sport sources told us in August that West Brom are long-time admirers of Maddison, who the Nottingham Post claimed had a £2.5 million release clause in his contract.
This means he could be almost 10 times cheaper than the £20 million Dack. But that is the premium you pay for proven Championship quality.
