Alex Gilliead’s contract at Premier League Newcastle United is running out and he could be offered a deal by local rivals Sunderland.
Alex Gilliead was born in Shotley Bridge and has been part of Newcastle United’s academy since all the way back in 2011.
It is understood that Black Cats manager Chris Coleman had made an ambitions attempt to sign Gilliead on loan from their local rivals, only for the 22-year-old to extent his loan spell at League One Bradford City instead.
But Sunderland will soon have the chance to sign Gilliead again.
Because the youngster is out of contract this summer and The Chronicle has suggested that it seems unlikely that he will be offered fresh terms, with Newcastle deciding to part company with a number of fresh-faced talents deemed not good enough to make the grade.
The report points out that Gilliead will not be short of offers, however, and it would be no surprise if Sunderland offered him the chance to stay in the North East.
The Sun claimed recently that a Sunderland side bottom of the Championship are drawing up a list of affordable transfer targets who have proven themselves in the third tier of English football and Gilliead fits the bill, playing 36 League One games for Bradford in 2017/18.
And the fact he will be a free agent should appeal to a Sunderland side stuck in huge amounts of debt.
