Rangers are reportedly hoping to bring Southampton’s Steven Davis back to the Scottish Premiership in the January transfer window.

Steven Davis might have walked away from Rangers after their demotion to the fourth tier in 2012, but that doesn’t mean he would not be welcomed back at Ibrox with open arms.
The Daily Express (16 October, back page) reported that the former Rangers captain could make an emotional return to the blue half of Glasgow in January after six years at Southampton.
Taking to Twitter, a number of Rangers fans expressed their excitement about Davis’ potential homecoming.
But is he really needed? Central midfield is arguably the strongest area of Steven Gerrard’s midfield right now.
At 33, and with just six minutes of Premier League football under his belt this season, Davis’ best days might be long gone.

Nevertheless, it cannot be understated just what sort of an impact Davis could have both on and off the pitch. There could be a title race in Scotland this season with Rangers making big improvements under Gerrard but it is still a young squad with the vast majority boasting limited experience of competing for trophies at the top level.
Even if Davis is not the same energetic enforcer who helped dominate Premier League midfields at Southampton, he won three Scottish Premiership titles during his time at Rangers and his leadership and experience could be invaluable if Gerrard wants to break Celtic’s domestic stranglehold.
This is the sort of galvanising addition that would only make Gerrard’s job easier.
