Scottish Premiership giants Rangers would love to keep Sean Goss at Ibrox when his loan spell from Championship outfit QPR expires.

Rangers fans might have wondered if it was too good to be true when Sean Goss was producing a series of masterful performances at the heart of their midfield.

The January loan signing from QPR showed exactly why he was compared to Michael Carrick in his Manchester United days, leading the vast majority of the Ibrox faithful to demand the 22-year-old be signed on a permanent contract.

Ian Holloway, the QPR manager, appeared to put an end to that, however, when he claimed that Goss’ future lies at Loftus Road despite failing to start a single league game in the first half of this season.

That, however, was when Goss was playing at his very best – a level of performance Rangers fans have not seen for a while now.

The German-born Englishman was found wanting in the 3-2 home defeat to Celtic in the Old Firm derby recently and was well below his best as Rangers lost again on Saturday, going down 1-0 to Kilmarnock. Goss was hooked at the break for Jason Holt.

But maybe, if you take a very positive spin on things, Goss’ sudden loss of form may be something of a blessing in disguise for Rangers. If he struggles again in the next few games, there will surely be less of a chance that QPR will be demanding his return in the summer, meaning a permanent move for Goss might not be as impossible as first thought.

Goss’ excellent early form seemed to make Rangers’ hopes of a long-term stay very unlikely. A loss of rhythm, however, may just have the opposite effect.
