Norwich City’s Scotland international centre-back Russell Martin could move to Ibrox as a replacement for Rangers’ Bruno Alves.

Norwich City fans were more excited than Rangers supporters when reports emerged suggesting that Russell Martin could be on his way to Ibrox in January.

The Scottish international centre-back is well past his best these days and is not even an important part of Norwich’s first-team squad these days. He has not made an appearance in the Championship since a humiliating 4-0 defeat away to Millwall in August.

But the Daily Record states that Rangers manager Graeme Murty is keen to bring the 32-year-old to Ibrox; provided the club can free up funds by finding a buyer for Bruno Alves.

It is understood that Rangers are keen to get the high-earning Alves off the club’s books. And the 36-year-old, who is worried about missing out on a place in Portugal’s World Cup squad, is attracting interest from clubs in Qatar, the Daily Record adds.

But while Rangers fans seem unconvinced by the possible addition of Martin, would he be a better addition to the squad than the frankly underwhelming Alves?

For one, Martin would know a few members of Rangers’ squad from his time with the Scottish national team. And, having played football in Britain for the whole of his professional career, he should have little difficulty adapting to the Premiership.

Alves, in comparison, has struggled with the pace of the game in Scotland following a nomadic career trekking across various leagues in Europe. And that is without mentioning the fact that Martin would command far lower wages and, in contrast to a player with one eye on World Cup selection, would be 100 per cent committed to Graeme Murty’s side.

Rangers, then, would be killing two birds with one stone.
