The enigmatic 36-year-old could be a game changer at Rangers.

Martin Jol may seem something of a relic from a bygone Premier League era but with SkyBet making him third favourite for the vacant managerial role at Rangers, could the experienced Dutchman be set for a shock return to Britain.

Moreover, what are the odds on the former Tottenham Hotspur boss revitalising Ibrox with one of Scottish football’s most headline-grabbing signings of many a year?

As reported by the Daily Mail, 36-year-old Dimitar Berbatov is on the lookout for a new club. In fact, he appeared on the verge of replicating the infuriating X Factor ‘call me’ hand signal.

The veteran Bulgarian may not have played a competitive game this season following the expiry of his contract with Greek outfit PAOK but it’s not as if losing a yard of pace would make a huge difference to his game.

After all, Berbatov’s impact is not calculated via high intensity sprints. They say the touch never goes and the two-time Premier League champion will surely retain the velvet class that would make him stand out in the fast and physical surrounds of the Scottish game.

He’s a serial winner too, a steely competitor despite his languid stance. Almost akin to Zlatan Ibrahimovic at his former club, just imagine the impact a player of his stature would have on the Rangers dressing room.

And so, onto the inevitable. How could Rangers, with their much-publicised financial restrictions, convince Berbatov to travel to Inverness, Dundee and Partick for a pocket change pay-packet?

Well, clearly he still beleives he has more to give in Europe, otherwise China or the UAE would surely have claimed another soul.

And, of course, the presence of a manger who trusts whole-heartedly in his maverick brilliance.

“I love this guy,’ Berbatov said in 2013 after Jol, who brought him to English football with Spurs, resigned him at Fulham, the Daily Mail reported. ‘It had been a long time since we worked together so when I came here to team up with him again it was great for me because we click.

“I can see that he trusts me 100 per cent on the pitch and this is what I like about him. It’s up to me to not disappoint him and this is my first and only goal really – not to let down the man who has put all his trust in me.”

Jol and Berbatov may just come as a pair.
