Championship underachievers Nottingham Forest could turn to League One Peterborough United to solve their goalscoring woes.
Goals are a real problem for Nottingham Forest right now.
Excitement was never going to be particularly high on the agenda when the arch pragmatist Aitor Karanka was hired to replace the comparatively free-wheeling Mark Warburton at the turn of the year but there really is no excuse for failing to score in each of your last five Championship games.
But could Nottingham Forest solve the problem by bringing arguably the Football League’s most potent attacking partnership to the City Ground this summer?
Between them, Marcus Maddison and Jack Marriott (above) have scored 44 goals and set up 28 more in all competitions for Peterborough United this season.
Maddison is an unpredictable and enigmatic winger who, at his best, is capable of moments of show-stopping quality. His tally of 28 assists is extraordinary – and many of his pinpoint deliveries have been gobbled up by the prolific Marriott.
With 32 goals this season, the former Luton Town striker is the Football League’s most lethal hitman.
And, in the last few days, both have been linked with Nottingham Forest. The Mail claims that the Championship giants are rivalling Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday for the £5 million-rated Marriott.
While The Mirror (page 51, April 8th) claimed that Maddison is wanted too. It is understood that he has a release clause in his contract of over £2 million which will come into effect if Peterborough miss out on promotion.
A £7 million+ double deal would be worth every penny for Forest, however, if Marriott and Maddison can bring their London Road form to the City Ground.
