Could Leeds United really strike major coup with Premier League-linked Ben Wilmot?

Chairman of League Two Stevenage has confirmed Leeds face competition from Premier League giants Tottenham, Chelsea and Man City for Ben Wilmot.

Ben Wilmot played no part of Stevenage’s 1-0 away win at Newport County on Saturday afternoon.

According to chairman Phil Wallace, the coveted centre-back was omitted from the squad as he nears a move away to a side far higher up the Football League ladder than the League Two Stevenage.

He even went as far as to confirm that Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Chelsea were just three of the teams keen to offer Wilmot a chance at the top level of English football.

So, if Leeds United win the race for an 18-year-old valued at around £1 million, it would look nothing short of remarkable. The Independent adds that The Championship side were very keen to sign Wilmot during the January transfer window and their season has rather unravelled since then with Leeds dropping into the bottom half of the table and the play-offs becoming a very distant memory.

Therefore, with results taking a major downward turn, it would be a shock if Wilmot would be willing to move to Elland Road ahead of runaway Premier League champions Man City not to mention Tottenham or Chelsea, who will both be playing European football next season.

Then again, Wilmot should perhaps take heart from the fact that Leeds manager Paul Heckingbottom provided the platform for many young talents at Barnsley and handed 20-year-old centre-back Paudie O’Connor his debut at centre-half during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Sunderland.

Wilmot will get chances at Leeds.
