Jack Clarke has been brilliant in each of his Championship cameos for Leeds United – but could Sunderland flop Lens steal his place?
Jack Clarke is the latest player to emerge out of Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United revolution.
The 18-year-old forward might have played just 149 minutes of Championship football this season but it’s fair to say he has seized every opportunity with both hands. Clarke came off the bench to inspire Leeds to a 1-0 win against Reading on Tuesday and he repeated the feat away at Sheffield United on Saturday.
Clarke robbed the ball off home goalkeeper Dean Henderson and set up Pablo Hernandez in the 82nd minute, sealing Leeds’ first win at Bramall Lane since 1992.
So with the teenager getting better by the week, is this the wrong time to bring in a player like Jeremain Lens?
According to Fotomac, Leeds sent scouts to watch 31-year-old winger Lens during Besiktas’ Europa League clash against Sarpsborg on Thursday. And it just so happens that the Dutchman produced one of his best displays of the season, helping the Super Lig giants recover from 2-0 down to win 3-2 with two stunning goals either side of a brilliant assist.
Now Lens, who moved to Besiktas for £6 million after a dismal spell at Sunderland (Northern Echo), is player with huge natural talent who could be the difference between one point and three in tight encounters.
And Clarke, for all his youthful exuberance, cannot play every week and will be in need of a rest now and again. But Leeds fans would rightly be concerned about the youngster’s development if Lens arrives at Elland Road.
