Could Gerrard help Rangers land Manchester United’s Scott McTominay?

Jose Mourinho, manager of Premier League giants Manchester United, blocked Rangers from luring Scott McTominay to Ibrox in January.

Rangers discovered back in December just how highly Scott McTominay is valued by Jose Mourinho.

The Mirror claimed that the Scottish Premiership giants had hoped to sign McTominay on loan for the second half of the 2017/18 – but Mourinho blocked the move by ensuring that the talented young midfielder would not be leaving Old Trafford, on loan or otherwise.

By the end of his breakthrough season, the Scot had made 23 first-team appearances, ousting the £89 million Paul Pogba on occasion, and was handed a specially made ‘Manager’s Player of the Year’ award by Mourinho for his efforts.

Though, according to the Metro, Mourinho is fully aware that the 21-year-old could struggle for first-team chances next time around should the manager’s top midfield targets arrive at Old Trafford over the summer.

It is understood that United want Shakhtar’s Brazil international Fred and Lazio’s pristine powerhouse Sergej Milinkovic-Savic. United have already rejected four loan offers for McTominay but could soften their stance if the duo arrive.

So this should be an opportunity for a Rangers side who will see Sean Goss return to QPR and could sell Josh Windass, as reported by the Scottish Sun.

Mourinho has great respect for new Ibrox manager Steven Gerrard, famously trying to sign him during his first spell at Chelsea, and could believe that McTominay will blossom under the tutelage or one of the greatest English midfielders of the modern era.
