Leeds United had great success bringing an experienced goalkeeper to Elland Road in 2016 and should do it again with De Vries surely leaving Celtic.

Dorus de Vries only signed a contract extension with Celtic back in November to commit his future to the club until the summer of 2019.

But with reports in the Scottish Sun claiming that the Hoops are keen to make loanee Scott Bain’s move from Dundee permanent – and with Craig Gordon soon to return from injury – the already seldom seen De Vries faces the prospect of being third choice at Parkhead.

This is far from ideal for a goalkeeper who, at the age of 37, is obviously heading towards the end of his career.

So the Dutchman should seriously consider bidding farewell to Celtic this summer, and despite his advancing years, there are plenty of teams in the English championship who could do with an experienced goalkeeper like De Vries.

Leeds United, for one.

It is understood that Whites boss Paul Heckingbottom will make a new shot-stopper a top priority this summer with neither Andy Lonergan nor the error-prone Felix Wiedwald doing anywhere near enough to justify keeping hold of the number one jersey.

And Leeds have had success signing a veteran ‘keeper on a short-term deal very recently. Rob Green was excellent at Elland Road during the 2016/17 season and his leadership and Championship nous has been badly missed since his summer move to Huddersfield Town.

De Vries, who represented Swansea, Nottingham Forest and Wolves in the second tier, could have a similar impact, while acting as an excellent mentor for the promising Bailey Peacock-Farrell.
