Five years after Liverpool paid £12 million to bring Alberto Moreno to Anfield, the Spaniard is on the verge of leaving Merseyside on a free transfer with his reputation in tatters (Goal).
The former Sevilla flyer enjoyed a bright start to life at Liverpool but that infamous performance in the 2016 Europa League final defeat to his former club preceded a dramatic fall from grace.
These days, Jurgen Klopp would rather start James Milner at left-back than place his trust in Moreno.
But it could be worse. According to Goal, the Reds’ Guilherme Siqueira was the other left-back on Liverpool’s radar at the time. But, while Moreno has gone from rising star to much-maligned forgotten man, at least he is still playing.
Siqueira, meanwhile, swapped Granada for Atletico Madrid but managed just one season in Diego Simeone’s starting XI before Filipe Luis returned to the Spanish capital.
A loan move to Valencia, meanwhile, produced just 24 La Liga appearances in two years. And, after the injuries took their toll, Siqueira made the shock decision to retire at the age of just 32 in August 2018.
Moreno, meanwhile, will be hoping to kick-start his career when his Anfield purgatory comes to an end.
