Mikel Arteta has been linked with the manager’s job at Premier League duo Everton and Arsenal, but should Rangers bring him back to Scotland?
Graeme Murty did his chances of staying on as Rangers manager beyond this season no good with that 4-0 thumping at Celtic in the Scottish Cup semi-final on Sunday.
The former Ibrox youth coach’s tactics and leadership have been called into question and the unseemly row that developed after the game, which has resulted in the suspension of experienced duo Lee Wallace and Kenny Miller, has not done Murty any favours either.
And it seems the campaign has started among supporters to bring Mikel Arteta back to Ibrox this summer.
The 36-year-old Spaniard is fondly remembered for his spell at Rangers between 2002 and 2004 but is now carving out a promising career in the dugout and is celebrating a Premier League title win in only his second season as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City.
Arteta is thought to be one of the brightest young minds in the game.
And the Mirror went so far as to claim in March that both Everton and Arsenal, who the former midfielder represented with distinction during his playing days, would consider offering Arteta his first gig in solo management at the end of this season.
But some Rangers fans would be willing to take a punt on Arteta, too. And, if Guardiola believes he can make it at the top level, that says a lot.
