Southampton’s Charlie Austin was furious after the 1-1 Premier League draw with Watford; could a return to Queens Park Rangers make him happy again?
On current form, could Southampton and QPR be swapping leagues in 2019?
Few would have expected that Queens Park Rangers could be an outside bet for promotion after a dismal start to the season that included a 7-1 defeat to West Brom, which seemed to suggest that Steve McClaren’s spell at Loftus Road would be short-lived.
But QPR are in top form now, two points adrift of the play-offs, and McClaren is currently the Championship’s Manager of the Month.
Southampton, in stark contrast, are in crisis, with one win in 12 Premier League games to their name. As a result, QPR fans have taken to Twitter to remind Charlie Austin that he will always be welcome back at Loftus Road.
The old-school centre-forward was a revelation at QPR, scoring 18 goals in 35 Premier League games in 2014/15 despite his club suffering relegation at the end of the campaign.
His time at Southampton, however, has been far less productive of late, and Austin’s frustration bubbled over after seeing a goal wrongly disallowed for offside in Saturday’s 1-1 home draw against Watford. His post-match rant has already become infamous.
Maybe a return to QPR would put a smile back on his face.
