Marcus Antonsson left Leeds United for League One Blackburn Rovers last summer and is now celebrating promotion for Tony Mowbray’s side.

Well, that didn’t take long.

After just one season in the third tier, Blackburn Rovers have stormed back to the Championship after a 1-0 win away at Doncaster on Tuesday night. With just two games to go, Tony Mowbray’s side are second behind Wigan Athletic with an unassailable seven-point lead over third-placed Shrewsbury Town.

And this is the kind of season Marcus Antonsson would have been dreaming of when he arrived at Ewood Park on loan from Leeds United last summer.

The Swedish striker failed to make an impact at Elland Road in 2016/17 after his £2 million move from Kalmar but has been a key figure in Blackburn’s immediate return to the second tier, featuring in 30 League One games.

Antonsson could hardly hide his joy on Twitter. And his mood would have improved further when he was inundated by messages from Leeds fans expressing how much they were looking forward to his return.

Whether Antonsson is given another chance in West Yorkshire remains to be seen. No doubt Leeds fans have warmed to the 26-year-old after seeing their current strikers toil and blaze wildly off target in recent months.

The fact is that Antonsson has just seven goals in League One and none since November amid a barren run that stretches back 15 games. This is hardly a great audition for life at Leeds but the fans want him back nonetheless.
