West Ham United loanee Sam Byram made his first Championship appearance since August as Nottingham Forest lost 3-0 at Sheffield Wednesday.

It is not easy to take a positive out of a 3-0 thrashing that appears to bring an end to your ailing play-off hopes.

But at least the long awaited return of Sam Byram gave Nottingham Forest fans something to cheer about as they followed up a 2-1 defeat to Rotherham United with a dreadful performance on the road at Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night.

The West Ham loanee has been out of action since August thanks to yet another injury but he was a shock inclusion in Martin O’Neill’s starting XI at Hillsborough, making just his second Championship appearance for the two-time European Cup winners.

While Forest were awful on the night, conceding a brace from Marco Mattias and one from George Boyd, Byram was, in the words of one supporter, a ‘class above’ at right-back.

The 25-year-old was solid at the back and impressive in possession. In fact, it looked like he’d never been away and, despite his ongoing injury issues, it seems Forest fans would love to see him stay at the club with Byram’s future at West Ham looking very uncertain.
