Wolverhampton Wanderers were tipped to take the Premier League by storm this season and they haven’t disappointed.

Backed by Chinese billionaire investors, aided by super-agent Jorge Mendes and boasting hugely talented players like Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho and Rui Patricio, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have been a breath of fresh air since their promotion.

After drawing away at both Manchester clubs, Wolves beat Southampton 2-0 at Molineux to rise up to eighth in the table, just three points adrift of the Champions League places.

And, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s 606 show (30 September, 6pm), Chris Sutton believes that Wolves are not yet ready to be considered as outsiders for the Premier League title but sees no reason why they couldn’t be playing European football next season.

“I really like Wolves and it’s been an unbelievable start to the season,” said former Aston Villa striker Sutton.

“Do I think they can challenge for a Premier League title in the next season or two? No I don’t but I think that this season it is possible that Wolves could sneak into the top six.

“There’s so much confidence and an identity. There’s a way of playing, they all seem to trust each other. They have been so impressive.”

Ivan Cavaleiro and Jonny Otto were on target as Wolves outclassed Southampton on Saturday and the Black Country side appear to be improving by the week.

As reported by The Mirror in June, the club’s owners want to finish in the top six this season and, if they do, Sutton’s prediction will have been right on the money.
