Celtic’s recruitment has come under the microscope after Brendan Rodgers’ side endured a dismal start to the new Scottish Premiership season.
Treble winners for the second year in succession as recently as May, it is all going wrong for Celtic now.
Brendan Rodgers’ side have endured their worst domestic start for 20 years, and were left in sixth place after the last-gasp 2-1 defeat to Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Sunday afternoon. As a result, Celtic’s recruitment has come under the microscope, with a number of their recent signings struggling to make an impact in new surroundings.
Chris Sutton, the former Bhoys striker turned outspoken pundit, has named two Celtic additions that have left him rather baffled.
“I don’t know who, apart from John McGinn, Brendan was targeting but he has talked about the team being weaker. True or not, what message does that send to the boys?” Sutton told the Daily Record.
“Marvin Compper (below) was signed in January and hasn’t been sighted. Daniel Arzani gets signed in the summer and isn’t even in the Europa League squad. I’m confused by it all.”
33-year-old defender Compper arrived from RB Leipzig in January for £1 million and was expected to add experience and intelligence in possession. But the one-time German international has not made a single Scottish Premiership appearance in eight months, although injuries have not helped his transition to Scottish football.
Australian wonder kid Arzani, meanwhile, arrived on a two-year loan from Manchester City but Celtic are reluctant to throw him in at the deep end, omitting him from their Europa League squad.
The 19-year-old looks like exactly the kind of skilful and unpredictable player that Rodgers needs right now.
