Allan McGregor could be banned after an alleged stamp on Aberdeen’s Lewis Ferguson during Rangers’ recent Scottish Premiership win.
Chris Sutton has been left baffled on Twitter as David Weir attempted to absolve Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor of any blame for his controversial clash with Aberdeen forward Lewis Ferguson last week.
Alfredo Morelos was sent off for the third time against The Dons this season as the Gers prevailed 4-2 at Pittodrie but McGregor was arguably fortunate not to follow him down the tunnel.
The 36-year-old was accused of deliberately stamping on Ferguson in the second half and, although he avoided a red card on the night, could now be hit by an SFA ban.
This is not the first time that McGregor has made headlines for the wrong reasons this season, having been spotted kicking out at Celtic’s Kristoffer Ajer in the 1-0 loss at Parkhead back in September.
But, speaking to the Daily Record, former Rangers skipper Weir has attempted to defend McGregor as the criticism mounts.
“As far as I’m concerned it’s inconclusive. It’s up for debate rather than being a clear-cut incident where there is no doubt about his intentions,” Weir said.
“But if people are trying to say he has set out with the intention of trying to hurt someone – which is what I can only imagine the case against him will be – then that’s well wide of the mark.”
Celtic legend Sutton, as is frequently the case, has not wasted an opportunity to respond. Clearly, he has been left stunned by Weir’s claims, having claimed on Twitter last week that McGregor should be banned for an ‘absolutely shocking’ challenge.
