Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs are just two points adrift at the top of the Premier League.
There is a real perception that Tottenham Hotspur have struggled in the opening weeks of the 2018/19 season.
There has been plenty of concern about the form of Harry Kane, the lack of new signings and the delay over the opening of their new stadium, casting a shadow over the North London giants. As a result, the fact that Spurs have actually made their joint-best start to a Premier League campaign has been unfairly overlooked.
Though, according to Arsenal legend Ian Wright, the negativity owes a lot to some rather underwhelming performances, such as the rather disjointed 1-0 win against Cardiff City on Saturday.
“I think it’s the standards they’ve set in the last few years and the way they’ve played is why you’re thinking they’re not playing like that or that it’s not quite clicked into gear yet,” Wright told the Monday Night Club on Radio 5 Live (8 October, 5pm).
“And watching them the other day against Cardiff, maybe last year they would have blasted them away with their scintillating football but it doesn’t seem to have clicked.”
Chris Sutton, however, seems to disagree. In his point of view, the fact that Tottenham are still winning games and are just two points off the top of the table without ever really getting out of second gear is an ominous sign for the rest of the Premier League.
“Is that not a good sign? If this is a bad start to the season, it’s a good bad start,” Sutton countered.
It remains to be seen whether Tottenham can put together a serious title challenge this season after establishing themselves somewhat as the nearly-men or neutrals’ favourites over a number of exciting yet ultimately frustrating campaigns.
