Chris Coleman explains Ethan Robson’s Sunderland omission

Ethan Robson has not played for Championship strugglers Sunderland since he committed his future to the Stadium of Light in early March.

Ethan Robson put aside speculation over his future at the start of March when he signed a new contract with Sunderland until 2020.

But the highly-rated academy graduate has not played for the club since then. In fact, Robson has not made an appearance in Sunderland colours since the 2-0 home defeat to Brentford back in mid-February.

But, according to Black Cats boss Chris Coleman, Robson still remains an integral part of his future plans.

“I was pleased to get him signed up. He’s a terrific kid, works hard, wants to improve,” the former Wales manager told the Chronicle of the 21-year-old, who made his senior debut for Sunderland in January’s FA Cup clash with Middlesbrough.

“It’s hard for him, we’ve given him game time in some of the matches but you can’t put that type of pressure on someone so young week-in, week-out.

“Robbo will come again though, he’s got that attitude, he wants to progress. He puts it in in training, then he’s disappointed when he’s not involved which is a good sign. So I’m pleased he’s put pen to paper.”

The Sun claimed before Robson committed his future to the Stadium of Light that Old Firm duo Celtic and Rangers were keeping a close eye on him, with his contract then due to expire at the end of the season.

But with relegation to League One looking increasingly likely for Sunderland, their group of exciting, homegrown youngsters like Robson, George Honeyman and Josh Maja are set to become more important than ever.
