Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger deal could reportedly threaten Tottenham Hotspur’s Juan Foyth move

Tottenham want to sign Estudiantes defender Juan Foyth, but Chelsea signing Antonio Rudiger could put the deal in doubt.

In many ways Juan Foyth is the typical Mauricio Pochettino player. Aged just 19, blessed with natural athleticism and with potential by the bucket-load, the Estudiantes centre-back has the skill-set and the potential to follow in the footsteps of countless Spurs stars and develop into a truly top-class performer under the Argentine manager.

According to the Mirror, Spurs have been watching the Argentina Under-20 international for a number of months. With a £5 million release clause in his contract, Foyth could be another inspired Tottenham bargain.

And it appears that the Londoners, whose youthful team finished second behind Chelsea last season, are ready to make their move.

“I know that my agent and (Estudiantes chairman Juan Sebastian) Veron are travelling to speak with Tottenham,” Foyth told Goal. “I am feeling relaxed. I would like to play in Europe, and if something comes up that convinces me and the club I will go.”

The Sun reports that Spurs are hoping to sell Austrian international Kevin Wimmer this summer after he fell out of favour under Pochettino last season, starting just four Premier League games.

And Foyth would be a much cheaper replacement than Swansea City defender Alfie Mawson and Middlesbrough captain Ben Gibson, the latter reportedly valued at £25 million despite suffering relegation last season.

Big blow?

Yet London rivals Chelsea could still have an inadvertent effect on Spurs’ transfer hopes. According to Football Italia, Serie A giants Roma have identified Foyth as the perfect replacement for Stamford Bridge-bound Antonio Rudiger.

The Sun claims that the German international is having a medical at Chelsea today before putting the finishing touches on his £35 million move.

Therefore, expect Roma to ramp up their interest in Foyth once Rudiger is posing in Chelsea blue. While signing a genuinely top class centre-half, Chelsea could also have an effect on Tottenham’s ability to strengthen their own squad this summer.
