Jed Steer started Aston Villa’s first game of the Championship season – but was then loaned out to League One Charlton Athletic.

What does the future hold for Jed Steer at Aston Villa? It seems even he doesn’t know the answer to that question right now.

It seemed that the 26-year-old would get the chance to establish himself at Villa Park for the first time once Sam Johnstone’s loan spell from Manchester United expired in the summer. But despite starting and impressing in the 3-1 opening day win away at Hull City, Steer was farmed out to Charlton Athletic soon after and replaced by Orjan Nyland.

The Norway international, however, has flickered from moments of madness to the odd brilliant save and the jury remains out. Back-up Andre Moreira, however, has looked far from convincing in his two EFL Cup outings.

So does Steer still have a future at Villa Park even though his contract is due to expire at the end of the season?

“Football goes in different ways and you have got to expect the unexpected. As it stands my contract is up next summer,” the former Norwich City ‘keeper told the Birmingham Mail.

“I just want to have a good year, play as many games as I can and see what happens. It’s all up in the air.”

Steer has established himself as Charlton’s number one since displacing Dillon Phillips in September, conceding just 16 goals in 11 games.

The Birmingham Mail have claimed that Villa have a re-call clause in Steer’s loan deal, meaning manager Dean Smith is able to bring the seldom-seen goalkeeper back to the Second City should Nyland fail to settle down.
