Sunderland are about to sign a new striker. At least, that is according to Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer.
In quotes reported by The Chronicle, The Addicks boss claims that The Black Cats have beaten his side to the signing of an as-yet unknown centre-forward.
“There was a striker we wanted but he’s just gone to Sunderland,” said Bowyer, who’s Charlton side beat Sunderland in the play-off final in May.
“So, we’re competing with League One clubs. That’s the reality of it. We don’t always get the people we’re trying to pursue but we’ll keep working hard and going through our list.”
Who on earth Bowyer is referring to is anyone’s guess.
There has certainly been no shortage of strikers linked with a move to the Stadium of Light this summer, though Lawrence Shankland and Freddie Ladapo are no longer on the market, having joined Dundee United and Rotherham respectively.
Sunderland fans will no doubt be hoping that Bowyer is referring to Doncaster Rovers talisman John Marquis. NewsShopper claims that Charlton are interested in the former Millwall youngster, who is also a £1 million target for Sunderland, according to the Northern Echo.
With 26 goals to his name last season, Marquis is the sort of proven League One striker who could fire Sunderland back into the second tier.
But with no confirmation yet from Sunderland’s side just yet, the supporters will have to use their imagination for the moment.
