Championship giants Aston Villa have the option to bring Jed Steer back from his loan spell at League One Charlton Athletic.

Aston Villa will have a decision to make with Jed Steer in the January transfer window – do they exercise the recall clause in his contract and bring the goalkeeper back to the Midlands or leave him on loan at Charlton Athletic for the rest of the season?
Despite starting the opening day win against Hull City, Villa farmed Steer out to The Addicks in the summer with Orjan Nyland arriving from Ingolstadt in his place.
But while Nyland’s performances have been a little erratic so far, the former Norwich City stopper has caught the eye between the sticks for Charlton, establishing himself as number one over the last three months.
And, speaking to London News Online, Charlton manager Lee Bowyer has made an honest admission about Steer’s future which suggests his future is up in the air.
“There’s a possibly that he could get recalled,” said the former Newcastle and Leeds United midfielder.
“That’s out of our hands, we can’t control that.

“But we’ll try to persuade them to let him stay, but it is nothing we can control.”
Steve Bruce obviously felt that Steer was not ready to be Aston Villa’s number one but, with Dean Smith now in the dugout, it remains to be seen whether the former Brentford boss shares his predecessor’s opinion.
In truth, Nyland deserves more time to prove himself in Villa colours but he must cut out the mistakes that have undermined his start to life in English football.
