Old Firm rivals Celtic and Rangers have been very busy in the January transfer window with the Scottish Premiership title up for grabs.

Celtic’s recruitment has left a lot to be desired in recent times.

A year ago, The Hoops snapped up Marvin Compper, Lewis Morgan and Charly Musonda and it’s fair to none of the trio made the impact expected of them in green and white.

And with Celtic sealing the signings of Timothy Weah, Vakoun Issouf Bayo and Oliver Burke within the first week of the current January transfer window, the supporters will be reserving their judgement for the time being.

Though, speaking to The Star, former Hoops hero Charlie Nicholas has taken aim at Brendan Rodgers’ side – and expressed doubts about whether West Brom loanee Burke will be a success.

“Where does Oli Burke fit in for the Hoops? He’s not smart enough to lead the line,” Nicholas said of the Scot, who flopped at West Brom after his £15 million move in 2017.

“He’s energetic and fast but will he replace James Forrest or Scott Sinclair on the wing?

“Celtic’s recruitment in recent times has been baffling. Youssouf Mulumbu and Lewis Morgan were odd signings.

“Rangers are now title favourites after the first week of the transfer window.”

In contrast to Celtic, Rangers have snapped up two proven, experienced players in 36-year-old striker Jermain Defoe and Northern Ireland captain Steven Davis, who won three league titles during his first spell at Ibrox.

Burke, Bayo and Weah (below), meanwhile, look like decidedly risky signings for a Celtic side whose chances of winning an eighth straight domestic crown suffered a hit with the 1-0 defeat at Ibrox in December.
