Scottish Premiership champions Celtic reportedly want to sign highly-rated midfielder Sean Longstaff from Newcastle United.

Remember Kundai Benyu?

Celtic appeared to have pulled off a real coup when they beat the likes of Aston Villa, West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur to the signature of the young Ipswich Town midfielder in the summer of 2017, as reported by the Mail.

But Celtic fans are yet to find out why Benyu is so highly-rated.

The 20-year-old Zimbabwe international has made only one league appearance since signing for Celtic and struggled to make an impression on loan at Oldham Athletic in the second half of last season, suffering relegation from League One with the Lancashire club.

Since returning to Glasgow, he has been nowhere to be seen. Benyu has not played once this season and was even omitted from Celtic’s Europa League squad.

A report from the Chronicle claiming Celtic have their eyes on another highly-rated young midfielder in Newcastle United starlet Sean Longstaff suggest that Benyu could soon fall even further down the pecking order.

Longstaff, a 20-year-old attacking midfielder who scored eight times on loan at Blackpool last season, is out of contract this summer and it is claimed that Celtic sent scouts to watch him in action for Newcastle’s U23s on Friday.

Longstaff, like Benyu, is an attack-minded and creative central midfielder. And if he is struggling for chances now, his position will be made even more difficult if Longstaff arrives at Celtic.
