Scottish Premiership champions Celtic are both reportedly interested in signing Portsmouth’s League One leader Whatmough.
Moussa Dembele will go down as one of the best investments in Celtic’s recent history.
The Scottish Premiership champions snapped up the out-of-contract Fulham striker for just £500,000 in 2016 (BBC), taking advantage of a loophole in regulations that allows clubs north of the border to sign players under the age of 23 without having to pay an expensive tribunal fee.
Two years later, Celtic made a £19 million profit when the Frenchman forced a move to Lyon.
And there are certainly shades of the Dembele deal as Celtic reportedly make a move for the highly-rated Portsmouth centre-back Jack Whatmough.
According to the Sun, the 22-year-old has caught the eye of Celtic and their Old Firm rivals Rangers after a fine season for Pompey, who are top of the League One table as things stand.
Interestingly, Whatmough is out of contract at the end of the season and Celtic could be in a position to land the former England youth star for a fraction of his worth, just like they did when Dembele’s Fulham deal came to an end.
Whether Whatmough will prove to as impressive a signing remains to be seen but a talented young defender would certainly be welcomed with open arms, particularly with Dedryck Boyata’s future lying elsewhere.
