Jeremy Toljan has played three games for Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic since arriving from Borussia Dortmund in January.
Jeremy Toljan might have endured a miserable 18 months in the yellow and black of Borussia Dortmund, but anyone who watched him during Germany’s victorious European U21 Championship campaign in the summer of 2017 will tell you how talented the young full-back is.
The then-Hoffenheim right-back was one of Germany’s star players as they won the tournament on Polish soil and it was his performance against England in the semi-finals which lives longest in the memory.
Toljan was a constant menace on the right side, exposing England time and time again and whipping a number of pinpoint deliveries into the penalty area. It was one of these that earned Germany their opening goal, headed home in clinical fashion by Davie Selke.
Toljan was not given much of a chance to showcase his skills at Dortmund, failing to make a single Bundesliga appearance all season. But the early signs are that a move to Celtic will see the 24-year-old recapture the kind of form that left England’s defenders nursing headaches.
The fleet-footed full-back has played three times for Celtic so far and impressed each time. He grabbed an assist on his debut, plus plenty of praise from Brendan Rodgers, and shone once more as the Hoops battered St Johnstone 5-0 in the Scottish Cup on Sunday.
It seems that Toljan is putting his Dortmund nightmare behind him and producing the kind of exciting, swashbuckling displays that led Germany to glory.
