Premier League Southampton were reportedly planning a move for Celtic midfielder Stuart Armstrong – but then Jack Wilshere announced his Arsenal exit.

Jack Wilshere speaks during an England press conference session at St Georges Park on March 20, 2018 in Burton-upon-Trent, England.

It is official. Jack Wilshere is leaving Arsenal.

In an emotional message posted on social media, the Gunners’ academy graduate confirmed that he would be on his way out of the Emirates stadium this summer when his contract expires. But should Celtic take a real interest in where he ends up?

Quite possibly, because Wilshere’s next move could have a real impact on Celtic’s hopes of cashing in on Stuart Armstrong.

Stuart Armstrong of Celtic arrives at the stadium prior to the Scottish Premier League match between Celtic and Ranger at Celtic Park on December 30, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

It is understood that The Hoops are keen to sell the Scotland international this summer with just one year remaining on his contract. And it was reported by the Daily Record (June 19, 8am) that Southampton were ready to step up their interest with Armstrong understood to be valued at an affordable fee of £6 million.

But that was before The Mirror claimed that The Saints have joined the long list of clubs keen to offer Wilshere a new home. Wilshere is cheaper than Armstrong, even if his wages will cost a lot more. And, with all due respect to the Celtic powerhouse, Wilshere is a far more gifted footballer too.

Jack Wilshere of Arsenal is closed down by Tiemoue Bakayoko of Chelsea during the Carabao Cup Semi-Final Second Leg at Emirates Stadium on January 24, 2018 in London, England.

So if it came down to it, surely Southampton would choose Wilshere over Armstrong. And, in truth, they probably only need one or the other.

Celtic, then, may be hoping that Juventus, Everton, Newcastle or co manage to snap up Wilshere before Southampton. Otherwise, their hopes of selling Armstrong for a decent fee will take a hit.
